While most people are busy trying to remove insects and arachnids from their homes, there are a few people out there who are inviting them to the dinner table. It is not what you think either. These bugs are not being welcomed as dinner partners. These bugs are being welcomed as part of the main course. You read that right. People are eating bugs for dinner. Let’s not forget dessert either. You can’t have a delicious bug dinner without some type of insect dipped in chocolate.
What Are They Eating?
Eating bugs sounds disgusting but people have been doing it for millions of years. At the recent Explorers Club annual dinner which takes place at the American Museum of Natural History in good old New York, over 1000 guests eagerly awaited the meal of the evening. This was no plain clothes event either. Guests were wearing their best flowing gowns and fancy tuxedos. Can you guess what was being served for dinner that night? The menu consisted of 100% bugs!
The meal is fitting for the Explorers Club. The whole idea of this club is to promote exploration of a scientific nature on new frontiers. This exploration just happened to be tempting your taste buds with a large variety of freshly seared creepy crawly insects!
No dinner would be complete without some tasty appetizers. Here were a few of the choices.
- Grasshopper Kabobs
- Cockroach Canapes
- Wax Worm Quesadillas
If those wonderful appetizers don’t get your tummy growling with excitement, then perhaps you would be more interested in what was being served as the main course. It has eight legs and is found in many states in the west, Texas included. Luckily the main course of deep fried tarantulas didn’t crawl out on its own. Crunch, crunch, yum, yum!
Overall the total amount of money spent on insects for this rather unusual evening meal was said to cost over $15,000. Over four pounds of organic cricket nymphs, 350 American cockroaches and a healthy 200 tarantulas were prepared and eaten during the event. There have been no reports of any single person who attended this munchy bug fest getting ill from their meal, but there were plenty of attendees whose appetite slowly crawled away!
