Summary of the Mosquito Control in Houston Video
John Onofrey: Hey, well this is good timing. Our field service manager, Jeff Murrell, just joined us. Hey Jeff, come on, get in the picture here. We need to talk a little bit about mosquito control in the Houston area. Darrell and I have been talking about the season coming up for mosquitoes and that it’s probably going to be fairly brisk. Can you talk a little bit about that and also what are some of our strategies we have for mosquito control, for our customers?
Jeff Murrell: – We had a very poor freeze this year and doesn’t look like we’re going to a really good one. We’re going to have a lot of mosquito activity, so you really want to watch out for any kind of standing water, alright? We do have mosquito misting systems, we do have power treatments we can use, to help with the population of the mosquitoes.
Another item you can use is called larvicide. We have a lot of ponding in the Houston area, you can always put the larvicide in and it’ll keep mosquitoes from maturing.
Mosquito Control for Up to 90 Days
John Onofrey: – Now, mosquito misting systems, we install those on our customers houses. Tell me the basic components about the mosquito misting system, a little bit about how it works and how it keeps the flying insects down?
Jeff Murrell: – Well, the beauty about the mosquito misting system, you have a big tank that’s already set for you. It lasts for a good 90 days. And it’s at your convenience, how often it’s going to spray. It not only kills mosquitoes, but it will help control other flying insects as well. One problem that we found, is that is does help control the population of spiders because now they have less flying insects to eat.
Backpack Fogging Eliminates Mosquitoes for Special Events
John Onofrey: – Awesome. Did we talk about fogging yet? Backpack fogging?
Jeff Murrell: – Yes, we do backpack fogging and it’s best for when you have special events. When there’s special events going on.
John Onofrey: – Right.
Jeff Murrell: – It’s only good for that day. You’re killing off the population that’s there. But if you try to do that on a regular business, the next crosswind you’ve got, you have your neighbors mosquitoes and now you’re pissed. We don’t want that.
John Onofrey: – Now, I imagine some of our customers have some properties that are infested with mosquitoes and maybe they buy a mosquito misting system from us. Are there other strategies we employ to help knock those mosquito populations down? Like, would we do a combination of a mosquito misting system, granules, fogging?
Mosquito Control in Ponding Situations
Jeff Murrell: – Mosquito misting system, the fogging is big, but the larvicide is the most important when you get into a situation like that. With a heavy infestation, larvicide is the most important part. You want to kill what’s flying, but just want to keep them from maturing.
John Onofrey: – Right and so, people always talk about breeding grounds for mosquitoes, because they breed in water. So, if you find a property and they’ve got standing water, other conducive conditions for mosquitoes, what’s your approach?
Jeff Murrell: – My approach is talk with the property owner about the larvicide or put the larvicide down first. If you have standing water, you’re going to have mosquitoes. Standing water doesn’t move, if you having moving water, there’s less chance.
John Onofrey: – Right.
Jeff Murrell: – But standing water is the breeding ground, that’s the active ingredient for mosquitoes to mature.
John Onofrey: – Right, so you would kill the larvae, maybe find out ways or strategies that you can eliminate standing water. Discuss those.
Jeff Murrell: – Absolutely. – People that have pots around their patio and they fill up with water, mosquitoes breed in there. – Not only that, people have their pets outside. You’d be surprised how many times I walk out and find larvae in the pets water bowl. Yes, that’s going to get to you as well.
John Onofrey: – Right, well thanks Jeff. Thanks for your time, good to see you.
